Doctors
and researchers around the world are calling “transdermal delivery” the
delivery system of the future! Research has discovered that a high absorption
rate of many supplements can be achieved when delivered through the skin,
usually as a cream, (the physical size of the supplement's molecule plays an
important role). The reason for this is when supplements are delivered
transdermally they go directly into the bloodstream, and initially bypass the
liver. The result can mean as much as 95% of the supplements get to the cells
where they are needed. Conversely, studies have shown when some substances are
taken orally, as little as 5% make it to the cells where they are needed. This
is because orally involves the stomach, liver and digestive system, this pathway
discards and excretes much of the supplements potency.
Melatonin is
produced by the Pineal gland; a pea-sized
gland located deep in the brain and is responsible for maintenance of our daily
biological rhythm. Melatonin production has a circadian rhythm (characterized by
or occurring during a 24 hour period) peaking during the early morning and
lowest levels are during the afternoon. Melatonin production is initiated by
darkness; hence Melatonin supplements should be taken at night. Melatonin levels
peak between 2:00 and 4:00 am. However, Melatonin is more than the hormone that
regulates sleep. Research indicates that Melatonin may improve brain function
and may also be one of the most powerful anti-aging hormones yet discovered.
Melatonin is also a powerful antioxidant.
The September 1999 issue of SKIN AND
ALLERGY NEWS revealed a study using a
topically applied skin cream containing antioxidants combined with a sunscreen,
participants used the cream for an 18 month period. These women were compared to
a placebo group who applied a sunscreen that did not contain antioxidants. The
results showed that the women using the sunscreen plus the antioxidants had
fewer wrinkles, showed reduced lipid oxidation to the skin and had greater
elasticity and thickness to the skin. The study also showed how solar radiation
and environmental pollutants produce adverse effects to the skin. This study
showed that topically applied antioxidants protected the skin better than orally
ingested antioxidant supplements.
Melatonin
being a powerful antioxidant protects against the most damaging of free
radicals, known as “hydroxyl radical”. Studies show that topical
melatonin, used in a topical cream, protects against skin aging. Research from
the University of Zurich's Dermatology Dept. demonstrated the role of free
radicals as a cause of acute and chronic skin damage. But also that the efficacy
of melatonin as a potent free radical scavenger that protects the skin cells
from injury and improves blood vessels from free-radical oxidation.
Researchers
are also studying Melatonin's effect on preventing or helping Alzheimer's and
Parkinson's disease. Researchers have
discovered that the pineal gland is the body's "time clock" and
regulates the body's rate of aging. Melatonin given to 18 month old mice (the
human equivalent of 60 years) has been shown to dramatically reverse aging,
extending their life to the human equivalent of 105 years. (ref: Pierpaoli et al
The Melatonin Miracle 1995). Like many other hormones, melatonin levels decrease
with age. This can lead to a reduced immune system and increased exposure to
diseases like cancer, heart disease and high blood pressure.
Sleep disorders are
one of the leading causes for patients to visit their family physicians, the
medical system has estimated that 1 in 5 visits to Doctors are to help patients
deal with various forms of sleep disorders, and usually result in the doctor
prescribing drugs.
The millions of
sleeping pills and tranquillizers prescribed by the medical profession
contribute to and further complicate a patient’s condition. Not helping to
relieve the insomniacs but only making them more drug dependant.
With the Sweet Dreams Melatonin cream you will obtain a good sleep pattern with no dependency since it works with your body not against it. Melatonin when applied at night is secreted into the cells and bathes the skin with its rejuvenating nutrients. The skin now has the ability to repair, renew and revitalize. The application at night gives the skin the hormone replacement it needs at the precise time the body is naturally recovering and repairing damage. Sweet Dreams Melatonin cream also has added Vitamin E to protect against swelling, redness, skin sensitivity and wrinkling.
